Inspiring Teacher Vs Inspiring Student
Greetings from Italy.. as my darling husband sleeps off his jetlag after an arduous 1+ 3/4 hour journey I've decided to discuss a subject close to my heart. What makes an inspiring teacher? Quite simply allowing your students to inspire you!
Every one of my students fills with my a profound desire to help them reach their musical potential. By discovering their inner motivation all one then need do is make sure you help them to tick all their inner boxes. Whether this be a desire to become a professional musician, a wish to pass all their exams, a longing to play all the music of Beethoven or Adele.
By continually reaffirming their motivations and the best ways of achieving it it is easy to keep them inspired and easy to feel inspired by each of their milestones. It's not always easy when students become lazy or fail to see the relevance of scales, theory, aurals, sight reading etc. But if we as teachers ensure that all our methods and materials are part of a holistic approach designed to make the path to their goal easier then they will soon see the benefits and will, at times begrudgingly, take your advice and help in all the myriad of forms it takes.
Keeping up the motivation of the student is literally the only way to help them. Enjoying their musical journey as much as they do and making sure the journey is both direct and scenic in equal measure xxxx
