The best teachers are fun but a little 'Machiavellian'
'I bet you can't play the left hand perfectly?' One of my favourite 'Machiavellian' lines!
I want my students to enjoy their lessons but obviously I have a plan I need to stick to so I will do what's necessary to get results. 'Very good but I bet you can't play that arpeggio in one breath!' 'Tell me the key signature of this piece and you only have to play it once!!!'
We all have students that need a little push so why not be a little cunning in order to achieve our ends! I keep a copious amount of sweets, stickers and musical stationery in my studio in order to gain 10 perfect phrases in a row!
