Multiple instruments!

I play several different instruments. I sometimes wonder if this makes me less credible than someone that specialises in only one. Music is my life! my profession and my hobby. It follows that since childhood I would have explored many different instruments! I have reached grade 8 on numerous instruments but I feel this works against me.

I was asked by a flute student why I also teach piano when I'm a flautist. When one of my flute students needed a piano teacher the mother said she was looking for a piano specialist.

Given that I've decided to devote my life to learning music I find this rather upsetting.  I think my younger students are quite happy about my diversity but I wonder about their parents! has anyone had a similar situation? x
